    Chief AI Officer, Citadel

    AI in Finance

    Li Deng joined Citadel as its chief AI officer in May 2017. Prior to Citadel, he was chief scientist of AI and partner research manager at Microsoft. Prior to that, he was a tenured full professor at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, as well as teaching/research at MIT (Cambridge), ATR (Kyoto, Japan) and HKUST (Hong Kong). He is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, and a Fellow of the ISCA. He has also been an affiliate professor at University of Washington since 2000.

    Deng was an elected member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society and was editor-in-chief of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine and of IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing from 2008 to 2014. Deng is also an author or co-author of six technical books on deep learning, speech processing, discriminative machine learning, and natural language processing.

    Chief Executive Officer, Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence

    A New Framework: Three Rules for Governing AI

    Dr. Oren Etzioni is chief executive officer of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence. He has been a professor at the University of Washington’s computer science department since 1991. He is also the founder or cofounder of several companies, including Farecast (sold to Microsoft in 2008) and Decide (sold to eBay in 2013), and the author of over 100 technical papers that have garnered over 23,000 citations. The goal of Oren’s research is to solve fundamental problems in AI, particularly the automatic learning of knowledge from text. Oren received his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University in 1991 and his BA from Harvard in 1986.

    Professor of Information Engineering, University of Cambridge; Chief Scientist, Uber

    State of AI: Teaching Machines How To Learn

    Zoubin Ghahramani is a professor of information engineering at the University of Cambridge and chief scientist at Uber. He is also deputy director of the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence and a fellow of St. John's College. He was a founding Cambridge director of the Alan Turing Institute, the U.K.’s national institute for data science. He has worked and studied at the University of Pennsylvania, MIT, the University of Toronto, the Gatsby Unit at University College London, and Carnegie Mellon University. His research focuses on probabilistic approaches to machine learning and artificial intelligence, and he has published over 250 research papers on these topics. He was cofounder of Geometric Intelligence (now Uber AI Labs) and advises a number of AI and machine-learning companies. In 2015, he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society for his contributions to machine learning.

    Future Focus: Quantum Computing in Next Generation AI Research

    Dr. Gil is a leading technologist and senior executive at IBM. As vice president of AI and IBM Q, Dr. Gil is responsible for IBM's artificial-intelligence research and for its commercial quantum computing program (IBM Q). Dr. Gil was previously the VP of Science and Solutions, directing a global organization of 1,500 researchers across 12 laboratories with a broad portfolio of activities spanning the physical sciences, the mathematical sciences, and industry solutions based on AI, IoT, blockchain, and quantum technologies. His research results have appeared in over 20 international journals and conferences, and he is the author of numerous patents. Dr. Gil is an elected member of the IBM Academy of Technology. He received his PhD in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT.

    Martin Giles is the San Francisco Bureau Chief of MIT Technology Review. Before assuming his current role, he was a partner at Wing Venture Capital, a Silicon Valley firm that invests in early stage business technology startups. Prior to Wing, Martin was The Economist Newspaper’s Silicon Valley Correspondent. Among his previous editorial roles at The Economist, he was the paper’s Banking Correspondent and Finance Editor. Martin is a Senior Industry Fellow at the University of California, Irvine’s Center For Digital Transformation and a member of the World Economic Forum’s Council On The Future Of Electronics. He is a graduate of Oxford University and holds an executive MBA from The University of Chicago’s Booth Graduate School of Business.

    Professor, UC Berkeley

    Robots at Work: What Precision Grasping Will Mean for Industry

    Ken Goldberg is an artist, inventor, and UC Berkeley professor. He is chair of the Industrial Engineering and Operations Research Department, with secondary appointments in EECS, art practice, the School of Information, and radiation oncology at the UCSF Medical School. Ken is director of the CITRIS “People and Robots” Initiative and the UC Berkeley Autolab, where he and his students pursue research in geometric algorithms and machine learning for robotics and automation in surgery, manufacturing, and other applications. Despite agonizingly slow progress, he persists in trying to make robots less clumsy. He has over 250 peer-reviewed publications and eight U.S. patents. He cofounded and served as editor in chief of IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering. Ken’s artwork has appeared in 70 exhibits, including the Whitney Biennial, and films he has co-written have been selected for Sundance and nominated for an Emmy Award. Ken was awarded the NSF Presidential Faculty Fellowship by President Bill Clinton in 1995, elected an IEEE Fellow in 2005, and selected by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society for the George Saridis Leadership Award in 2016.

    Staff Research Scientist, Google Brain

    Ian Goodfellow is a staff research scientist at Google Brain studying artificial intelligence. He is best known as the inventor of generative adversarial networks and as the lead author of the deep-learning textbook (www.deeplearningbook.org). He is one of the leading researchers in the emerging field of AI security, studying adversarial examples and how to prevent them. He founded the Self-Organizing Conference on Machine Learning and co-created the CleverHans adversarial example library. He leads a research group within Google Brain studying adversarial techniques in AI.

    Gourley

    Founder and CEO, Primer

    Sean Gourley is founder and CEO of Primer. Previously, he was CTO of Quid, an augmented-intelligence company he co-founded in 2009. Prior to Quid, Gourley worked on self-repairing nano-circuits at NASA Ames. He holds a PhD in physics from Oxford, where his research as a Rhodes Scholar focused on complex systems and the mathematical patterns underlying modern war. This research was published on the cover of Nature. He has served as a political advisor, briefed USCENTCOM at the Pentagon, and addressed the United Nations in Vienna. Gourley sits on the Knight Commission, serves on the Board of Directors at Anadarko (NYSE: APC), and is a TED Fellow.

    Understanding Intelligence

    Brenden M. Lake is an assistant professor of psychology and data science at New York University. He received his MS and BS in symbolic systems from Stanford University in 2009, and his PhD in cognitive science from MIT in 2014. He was a postdoctoral data science fellow at NYU from 2014 to 2017. Brenden is a recipient of the Robert J. Glushko Prize for Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation in Cognitive Science. His research has been covered by many news outlets (New York Times, Washington Post, MIT Technology Review, etc.) and was selected by Scientific American as one of the most important advances of 2016. Brenden's research focuses on computational problems that are easier for people than they are for machines, such as learning new concepts, creating new concepts, learning to learn, and asking questions.

    Democratizing AI: Applied AI in Global Industry

    Jia Li is Google’s head of R&D, cloud AI, and machine learning. Before joining Google, she was the head of research at Snap, leading research innovation, and led the visual computing and learning group at Yahoo Labs. Jia received her PhD in computer science from Stanford University. She is program chair of the ACM Multimedia Conference 2017, associate editor of The Visual Computer: International Journal of Computer Graphics, and an industrial advisory board member of the Computer Vision Foundation. In 2014, she was selected to receive the Super Star award at Yahoo, the highest award at the company. She was also awarded the Master Inventor Award for her innovations in computer vision, machine learning, artificial intelligence, mobile vision, e-commerce, product recommendation, and image search. She was the leader of the team that won first prize in the Semantic Robotics Vision Challenge sponsored by the NSF and AAAI in 2007. Her work has been widely reported in Ars Technica, ZDNet, GigaOm, Venture Beat, the Mirror, Business Insider, New Scientist, MIT Technology Review, and other media. She was listed as one of the “Secret Power Players Who Run Snapchat” by Business Insider in 2016.

    Gideon Lichfield has been the editor-in-chief of MIT Technology Review since December 2017. He spent 16 years at The Economist, first as a science and technology writer and then in postings to Mexico City, Moscow, Jerusalem, and New York City. In 2012 he left to become one of the founding editors of Quartz, a news outlet dedicated to covering the future of the global economy that is now widely recognized as one of the most innovative companies in digital media. Gideon has taught journalism at New York University and been a fellow at Data & Society, a research institute devoted to studying the social impacts of new technology. He grew up in the UK and studied physics and the philosophy of science.

    Defining Ethical AI

    Terah Lyons is the founding executive director of the Partnership on AI, a multi-stakeholder nonprofit organization founded by Amazon, Apple, DeepMind, Facebook, Google, IMB, and Microsoft to advance the benefits and address the challenges of machine intelligence. She is a former policy advisor to the U.S. Chief Technology Officer in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and a Mozilla Foundation technology policy fellow. In her capacity at the White House, Terah led a policy portfolio in the Obama administration focused on machine intelligence, including AI, robotics, and intelligent transportation systems. She also advised the administration on issues related to diversity and inclusion in the technology industry and entrepreneurial ecosystem. Previously, Terah was a fellow with the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences based in Cape Town, South Africa. She is a graduate of Harvard University, where she currently sits on the alumni association’s board of directors.

    Addressing Bias in AI

    Tess Posner is a social entrepreneur focused on increasing equity and inclusion in the tech economy. As executive director of AI4ALL, she is creating opportunity for underrepresented groups in the artificial-intelligence field through education programs and peer, mentor, and professional supports. Before joining AI4ALL, she was managing director of TechHire at Opportunity@Work, a national initiative launched out of the White House to increase diversity in the tech economy, where she oversaw the network of 72 cities, states, and rural areas and 1,300+ companies creating more inclusive education and hiring pathways. Earlier in her career, Tess built and ran Samaschool, a nonprofit that equips low-income people to find work in the digital economy through an online platform training 50,000+ students worldwide and a dozen diverse locations from New York City to rural Arkansas to East Africa. Tess’s work has been featured by Business Insider, TechCrunch, and Fast Company and funded by the Tipping Point Community, JPMorgan Chase, the California Endowment, and the Robin Hood Foundation. She holds a master’s degree from the Columbia University School in Social Enterprise Administration and a bachelor’s in liberal arts from St. John’s College.

    China’s AI Awakening

    Xiaoou received his B.S. degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1990 and his M.S. degree from the University of Rochester in 1991. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1996.

    He is a professor of the Department of Information Engineering of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Associate Director of Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of Chinese Academy of Science. Professor Tang is the founder of SenseTime and was previously the group manager of the Visual Computing Group at Microsoft Research Asia from 2005 to 2008.

    Dr. Tang's seminal work on face recognition was the first face recognition algorithm to surpass human performance.

    Moonshot Thinking in Machine Learning: Applied AI Takes Flight

    Dr. Astro Teller is currently Captain of Moonshots (CEO) of X, Alphabet’s factory for building magical, audacious ideas that through science and technology can be brought to reality. He is also a cofounder and a current director of Cerebellum Capital, a hedge fund management firm whose investments are continuously designed, executed, and improved by a software system based on techniques from statistical machine learning. He was cofounder and CEO of BodyMedia, a leading wearable body monitoring company that was sold to Jawbone in 2013.

    Dr. Teller holds a BS in computer science from Stanford University, an MS in symbolic and heuristic computation, also from Stanford University, and a PhD in artificial intelligence from Carnegie Mellon University, where he was a recipient of the prestigious Hertz fellowship.

    AI’s Economic Impact

    Laura D. Tyson is a Distinguished Professor of the Graduate School and Faculty Director of the Institute for Business & Social Impact at the Berkeley Haas School of Business. She chairs the Blum Center for Developing Economies Board of Trustees. From 2002-2006, she served as Dean of London Business School and from 1998-2001 she served as Dean of the Berkeley-Haas. Tyson was a member of the US Department of State Foreign Affairs Policy Board and a member of President Obama’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness and the President’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board. She served in the Clinton Administration as the Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers (1993-1995) and as Director of the National Economic Council (1995 – 1996). She is a member of the Board of Directors of AT&T and CBRE Group Inc. She is the co-author of Leave No One Behind, a report for the United Nation’s High-Level Panel on Women’s Economic Empowerment.

    Dr. Matt Wood is part of the technical leadership team at Amazon Web Services, pulling from over a decade of expertise in distributed systems, architecture, Web-scale analytics, big data, machine learning, and high-performance computing to help customers bring their ideas to life through technology. After medical school, Dr. Wood completed his PhD in machine learning and bioinformatics, joined Cornell as a research fellow, and contributed to the next-generation DNA-sequencing platform at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. Since joining Amazon Web Services in early 2010, he has played a role in introducing many significant new features and services to customers on the AWS Cloud, including AWS Lambda, Amazon Kinesis, and Amazon Machine Learning.

    Technical Chief, Natural Language Processing, Baidu

    Breaking Barriers with Machine Translation

    Hua Wu is the technical chief of Baidu’s natural-language processing department and the president of the Baidu Technical Committee. Her research fields include machine translation, natural-language processing (NLP), machine learning, dialogue systems, and the knowledge graph.

    Over her seven years at Baidu, she and her team have achieved multiple technology breakthroughs in NLP and machine translation, many of which have been successfully deployed in a range of Baidu products used by hundreds of millions of users. Hua Wu also cofounded the Baidu Translate project, which provides instant, free multilingual text translation, and built the core technology for Baidu’s personal assistant.

    Before joining Baidu, she was with Microsoft Research Asia and Toshiba Research Center, where she worked on NLP and machine translation. She holds a PhD from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in NLP and machine translation.

  • Cancellation Policy

    If you cancel your registration for EmTech Digital for any reason, you must notify us in writing before February 26, 2018, for a refund less a $295 processing fee. Cancellations on and after February 26 are nonrefundable. You may transfer your registration to another person at any time by providing authorization to us in writing.
