MIT Technology Review returns to the West Coast for its signature conference on artificial intelligence, hosting leaders from academia, enterprise, and government as we examine amazing advances in AI and explore the most pressing AI adoption issues of today.

    Cofounder and Chief Business Officer, Soul Machines

    Greg Cross is cofounder and chief business officer of Soul Machines. Greg is one of the original tech nomads, who has spent his career traveling to and living in every major tech market in the world. He now lives in New Zealand but creates businesses that compete on the international stage. Most recently, PowerbyProxi, a wireless charging company he cofounded, was sold to Apple in 2017.

    In 2016 Greg teamed up with Dr. Mark Sagar to create Soul Machines to build a HumanOS for Artificial Intelligence and explore the future of human machine cooperation. They are at the cutting edge of AI research: their unique Digital
    Brain, inspired by neuroscience and developmental psychology, is leading the way in what comes after deep learning, as we move towards Artificial General Intelligence. With global corporations like Autodesk, Mercedes Benz, Royal Bank of Scotland, and P&G as customers, Soul Machines is re-imagining what is possible in the delivery and underlying economics of highly personalized customer experiences and specialized knowledge.

    Fernandez

    CEO, Darwin.AI

    Sheldon Fernandez is a respected thought leader and CEO of DarwinAI, a Canadian startup that facilitates edge and explainable AI being leveraged in numerous industries, including autonomous vehicles, consumer electronics, and aerospace. He has spoken at numerous conferences in numerous contexts and has written technical books and articles on many topics, including artificial intelligence and computational creativity. Throughout his career, Sheldon has coupled his entrepreneurial endeavors with non-technical pursuits, resulting in an interdisciplinary approach that is critical to the intelligent application of AI. He obtained a Master’s degree in theology from the University of Toronto with thesis work in neuroscience and metaethics and also pursued creative writing at Oxford University.

    Darwin’s unique technology is the byproduct of years of scholarship from their academic team at the University of Waterloo. The company was recently included on insideBigData’s list of top 50 impactful companies for 2019 and was recently named a ‘cool vendor’ by Gartner for Enterprise AI and governance.

    Senior Innovation Manager, DHL

    Ben Gesing is a global innovation leader with 7+ years of experience developing technical solutions in the logistics, telecommunications, and consumer electronics industries. Today he leads the Global Trend Research activities at DHL, based from the DHL Innovation Center near Bonn, Germany. He is author of the companies’ industry trend report on Artificial Intelligence in Logistics published in 2018. Together with his team, he is responsible for shaping the innovation agenda at Deutsche Post DHL Group, from publishing industry research to piloting and scaling cutting-edge solutions in the areas of artificial intelligence, computer vision, and robotics in live logistics operations together with startups, customers, and operators.

    Han

    Assistant Professor, MIT

    Song Han is an assistant professor at MIT EECS. Dr. Han received his PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Tsinghua University. Dr. Han's research focuses on efficient deep learning computing. He proposed “Deep Compression” and “EIE Accelerator," which impacted the industry. His work received the best paper award in ICLR'16 and FPGA’17. He was the cofounder and chief scientist of DeePhi Tech, which was acquired by Xilinx. Dr. Han was named one of MIT Technology Review's Innovators Under 35.
  • Catherine
    Havasi

    Visiting Scientist, MIT Media Lab

    Dr. Catherine Havasi is an AI researcher and entrepreneur. In the late 90s, she was a crowdsourcing pioneer when she cofounded the Common Sense Computing Initiative, or ConceptNet, the first crowd-sourced project for artificial intelligence and the largest open knowledge graph for language understanding. Her work has spanned computational creativity, transfer and meta learning, natural language understanding, and educational outreach, resulting in several startup companies: Dalang, Luminoso, and Learning Unlimited. She is currently a visiting scientist at the MIT Media Lab; she directed the Digital Intuition group there under a prior appointment.

    Lange

    Vice President of AI and Machine Learning, Unity Technologies

    Dr. Danny Lange is VP of AI and Machine Learning at Unity Technologies. He joined from Uber, where he was Head of Machine Learning. Previously, Danny was General Manager of Amazon Machine Learning. Before that, he was Principal Development Manager at Microsoft, where he led a product team focused on large-scale Machine Learning for Big Data. Danny spent eight years on Speech Recognition Systems, first as CTO of General Magic, Inc., then through his work on General Motors OnStar Virtual Advisor, one of the largest deployments of an intelligent personal assistant until Siri. Danny started his career as a Computer Scientist at IBM Research.

    Danny holds MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science from the Technical University of Denmark. He is a member of ACM and IEEE Computer Society and has several patents to his credit.

    Lichfield

    Editor in Chief, MIT Technology Review

    Gideon Lichfield has been the editor-in-chief of MIT Technology Review since December 2017. He spent 16 years at The Economist, first as a science and technology writer and then in postings to Mexico City, Moscow, Jerusalem, and New York City. In 2012 he left to become one of the founding editors of Quartz, a news outlet dedicated to covering the future of the global economy that is now widely recognized as one of the most innovative companies in digital media. Gideon has taught journalism at New York University and been a fellow at Data & Society, a research institute devoted to studying the social impacts of new technology. He grew up in the UK and studied physics and the philosophy of science.

    Lu

    International Public Policy Manager, Access Partnership

    Xiaomeng Lu is Access Partnership’s International Public Policy Manager. She is well-versed in the technology sector, specializing in standards, cybersecurity, Internet governance, sustainability, and market access issues. She has extensive experience within Asia, with a strong emphasis on China; and her expertise includes how government agencies, indigenous companies, foreign businesses, industry groups, and media influence and interact with each other to form technology policy. Her in-depth understanding of the Chinese market and people serve as the basis for valuable political and policy insight and analysis. She has achieved favorable policy outcomes for Fortune 100 technology companies across the world, including in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Pakistan, Taiwan and the UAE.

    Before joining Access Partnership, Xiaomeng spent six years at the Information Technology Industry Council where, among other initiatives, she led a coalition of industry groups that successfully secured the indefinite delay of a Chinese manufacturing regulation, saving global information technology manufacturers billions in potential losses.

    Xiaomeng holds a Master’s Degree in International Trade Policy from Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey and a Bachelor’s Degree in International Economics and Trade from Renmin University of China.

    Founder and CEO, Robust.AI; Professor Emeritus, NYU

    Gary Marcus is a scientist, best-selling author, and entrepreneur. He is founder and CEO of Robust.AI and was founder and CEO of Geometric Intelligence, a machine learning company acquired by Uber in 2016. He is the author of five books, including The Algebraic Mind, Kluge, The Birth of the Mind, and The New York Times best seller Guitar Zero, as well as editor of The Future of the Brain and The Norton Psychology Reader.

    He has published extensively in fields ranging from human and animal behavior to neuroscience, genetics, linguistics, evolutionary psychology, and artificial intelligence, often in leading journals such as Science and Nature, and is perhaps the youngest Professor Emeritus at NYU.

    Ovadya

    Fellow, Alliance for Securing Democracy

    Aviv Ovadya is the founder of the Thoughtful Technology Project, a 'credibility consultant', and a non-resident fellow at the German Marshall Fund's Alliance for Securing Democracy. Aviv has been involved in raising the alarm around online and AI-driven misinformation from before the 2016 US election, and his efforts have been covered by major news organizations across five continents. He received his SB and MEng degrees in computer science at MIT and worked and consulted in Silicon Valley before becoming the founding Chief Technologist at the Center for Social Media Responsibility at the University of Michigan. Aviv was also a founding member of the Credibility Coalition, consulted for Snopes, was a Knight Innovation Fellow at the Tow Center at Columbia University, and was a TED CIVIC summer resident. He has spoken internationally about addressing threats to discourse and democracy, including for TEDx, the Council on Foreign Relations, and Denmark's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and has written for Bloomberg, HBR, and the Washington Post.

    Aviv's work to improve our information ecosystem touches on misinformation, synthetic media (e.g. deepfakes), content moderation, recommendation engines, distributed sense-making, contextualization, platform design, governance, media literacy, and operationalizing tech ethics.

    Polli

    Founder and CEO, pymetrics

    Dr. Frida Polli is an award-winning Harvard and MIT trained neuroscientist turned CEO and a global thought leader on both the future of work and ethical AI, including how the latter will play a critical role in shaping this future.

    She is the founder and CEO of pymetrics, a talent matching platform that uses behavioral data and audited AI to help companies like Unilever, LinkedIn, and Accenture better understand their workforce, as well as make fairer and more predictive people decisions.

    Frida was a pre-doctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School, a postdoctoral fellow at MIT, as well as a Life Science Fellow at HBS. She has appeared on CNN, BBC, MSNBC, BloombergTV, and NPR, as well as presented as a WEF Tech Pioneer at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the President’s Circle at the National Academy of Sciences, and other major scientific and world conferences.

    Rao

    VP of Research, AI Foundation

    Delip Rao is the VP of Research at AI Foundation, where he leads speech, language, and vision research efforts for generating and detecting artificial content. Prior to this, he founded Joostware, an AI research consulting company, and The Fake News Challenge, an initiative to bring AI researchers across the world to work on fact-checking related problems.

    Delip specializes in NLP research for real-world situations. He has worked on NLP and ML research problems involving semi-supervised learning, graph-based ranking, sequence learning, distributed machine learning, and more and has published several highly-cited papers in these areas. Delip is the author of a book on Deep Learning and Natural Language Processing.

    Delip worked previously as a Research Scientist at Amazon (Alexa), Twitter, and Google.

    Rossi

    AI Ethics Global Leader and Distinguished Research Staff Member, IBM Research

    Francesca Rossi’s research interests focus on artificial intelligence, including constraint reasoning, preferences, multi-agent systems, computational social choice, and collective decision making. She is also interested in ethical issues in the development and behavior of AI systems, particularly for decision support systems for group decision making. She has published over 200 scientific articles in journals, conference proceedings, and as book chapters. She has co-authored a book and has edited several volumes, including conference proceedings, collections of contributions, special issues of journals, as well as a handbook.

    She is a fellow of both the worldwide association of AI (AAAI) and of the European one (EurAI). She has been president of IJCAI (International Joint Conference on AI), an executive councilor of AAAI, and the Editor in Chief of the Journal of AI Research. She is a member of the scientific advisory board of the Future of Life Institute (Cambridge, USA) and a deputy director of the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence (Cambridge, UK). She is in the executive committee of the IEEE global initiative on ethical considerations on the development of autonomous and intelligent systems, and she is a member of the board of directors of the Partnership on AI, where she represents IBM as one of the founding partners. She is a member of the European Commission High Level Expert Group on AI and the general chair of the AAAI 2020 conference.

    Richard Socher is Chief Scientist at Salesforce, where he leads the company’s research efforts and works on bringing state of the art artificial intelligence solutions to Salesforce.

    Richard was awarded the Distinguished Application Paper Award at the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) 2011, the 2011 Yahoo! Key Scientific Challenges Award, a Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship in 2012, a 2013 "Magic Grant" from the Brown Institute for Media Innovation, the 2014 GigaOM Structure Award, and is currently a member of the WEF Young Global Leaders Class of 2017.

    Senior Vice President, Customer Technology, Walmart

    Fiona Tan joined Walmart in 2014 and is currently the Senior Vice President of Customer Technology. She is responsible for innovation and engineering execution on all customer-facing technology across Walmart’s physical and digital footprint. Her team leverages data and machine learning to drive marketing and advertising campaigns, oversees all personalization capabilities, and delivers the desktop and mobile customer experience for Walmart’s eCommerce as well as the technology across point-of-sale systems, pharmacy, specialty departments, and associate productivity apps in Walmart stores.

    Previously, Fiona was Walmart’s Vice President of Engineering, responsible for product roadmap and engineering capabilities for Walmart's international eCommerce businesses as well as the Sam’s Club business in the US. In addition, her team drove technology strategy and operational excellence across Walmart Labs.

    Prior to Walmart, Fiona served in a number of leadership roles at Ariba and TIBCO Software. At Ariba, she led a global engineering organization responsible for the strategy, lifecycle, and delivery of the Ariba Commerce Network. At TIBCO Software, she was responsible for a major product line as well as the management of their offshore development centers.

    Fiona has a master’s degree in Computer Science from Stanford and a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

    Principal Scientist, Google Brain

    Vincent Vanhoucke is a principal scientist in the Google Brain team and director for Google's robotics research effort. His research has spanned many areas of artificial intelligence and machine learning, from speech recognition to deep learning, computer vision, and robotics. He holds a doctorate from Stanford University and a diplôme d'ingénieur from the École Centrale Paris.

    Vice President of Engineering, LinkedIn Talent Solutions (LTS) and Careers

    Maria Zhang is Vice President of Engineering for LinkedIn Talent Solutions (LTS) and Careers, which helps recruiters connect with quality talent and connects job-seekers with opportunity. Prior to LinkedIn, Maria served as CTO at Tinder, where she built a world-class team of engineers and scaled the app to serve a rapidly growing global user base.
